Join us for a beautiful spring countryside walk from Virginia Water Lake, finishing near Windsor Castle. Many of our members attend trips solo, but feel free to invite friends and family.

Expect:

This is a scenic 7–8 mile walk at a comfortable pace.

Key Sights

  • Copper Horse Statue & Long Walk: Iconic tree-lined path slopes downhill to Windsor Castle, beside the Thames.

  • Virginia Water Lake: Originally a stream; drained during WWII for security reasons; featured in Harry Potter films.

  • The Cascade (Waterfall): Constructed from stones from Bagshot Heath, possibly from a Saxon settlement. A stream runs through a glen to the Thames at Chertsey. Nearby is ‘The Robber’s Cave’.

Walk Description

  • Distance: 7–8 miles

  • Grading: Easy, flat path all the way

  • Rating: 2/10

  • Ascent: 189m

  • Walk Time: About 4.5–6.5 hours depending on pace and group size

Breaks: 2–3 short breaks (10–15 mins) + 30-minute lunch picnic.
Arrival in Windsor allows optional small group activities: visit the castle (entry extra), stroll along the River Thames, or explore the shopping centre & eateries.

This is the 5th time this walk is organised. Many finish at Lebanese Nights, a halal restaurant at 41 Thames St, Windsor. Menu details: Lebanese Nights Windsor

Meeting Point

  • Location: Clapham Junction Train Station, outside Marks & Spencer

  • Time: 9:00 am (train departs 9:19 am)

  • Return: Planned back in London by 7:00 pm (group train ticket required for day)

Food

Bring a snack/lunch for the walk. A pub visit is planned after the hike.

£30, non-refundable unless cancelled (minus PayPal fees)

  • Comfortable clothing and footwear (trainers/boots with grip, no steep hills)

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers recommended

  • Water (1–2 litres)

  • Packed lunch/picnic, snacks
